Healthy Lunchboxes for Primary School Children

Please enter an intrAs part of our ongoing work to promote healthy lifestyles, we’re sharing some simple guidance to help families build healthy lunchboxes for school.

A healthy, balanced lunch helps children stay focused, enjoy learning and feel ready for the day ahead. At our school, we’re keen to help families with lunchbox ideas that are simple, budget-friendly and realistic—and most importantly, foods children will actually want to eat.

Following advice from local health professionals, we promote lunchboxes that are nutritious, tooth-friendly and varied, helping to build healthy habits over time.

What should a healthy lunchbox include?

Aim to add these each day:

🥪 A starchy item
For example: bread, wraps, pitta, pasta, rice, tortillas

🥚 A protein choice
For example: eggs, tuna, chicken, beans, lentils, hummus

🧀 A dairy food (or alternative)
For example: yoghurt, cheese, milk, or plant-based options

🍎 At least two portions of fruit and vegetables
For example: apple slices, carrot sticks, cucumber, grapes (prepared safely)

💧 A healthier drink
Water is the best option. Milk is also a good choice, and sugar-free squash can be included now and then.
